RISE & THRIVE

Designing a Career and Life That’s Genuinely Yours

By Michele Joseph

A Practical Guide for Ambitious Women

About the book

You can be good at your job and still wonder where it’s taking you.

Rise & Thrive: Designing a Career and Life That’s Genuinely Yours is a practical guide for ambitious women who are ready to stop defaulting to someone else’s definition of success and start deciding what they want work, and life, to look like.

A lot of career advice starts by telling women what to fix: speak up more, build confidence, network harder, become a better leader. Rise & Thrive starts somewhere else. It recognizes the skills, strengths, and experience you already have, then helps you use them more deliberately in the world as it actually works.

You’ll learn how to make your contribution visible without turning self-promotion into a second job. How to build relationships that go beyond networking. How to communicate, handle conflict, advocate for yourself, talk about money, understand the unwritten rules around advancement, and lead without taking everything on yourself. Just as important, you’ll learn when the problem is yours to work on, and when it isn’t.

The book also asks a bigger question: What are you building all of this toward?

Careers are long enough to have seasons. What matters now may not be what mattered five years ago, or what matters five years from now. Rise & Thrive gives you practical ways to think about what comes next without pretending you need your entire future figured out in advance.

This isn’t a promise of the perfect career or a five-year answer. It’s a way to understand your situation more clearly, make better decisions, and create the next chapter of your career with your life in mind.

Your ambition was never the problem. The question is what you want to do with it.

Companion workbook

Every chapter in this book ended with a short Your Rise exercise, something you could stop and answer before moving on. This section brings all twenty-five of those moments together, along with the final Time to Thrive exercise, and gives you more room to work through them.

You do not need to start at the beginning, and you do not need to complete every page. Start with the question that feels most relevant to where you are now. You might work through one or two spreads and leave the rest alone. You might come back months from now and find that a question you skipped the first time is suddenly important. Both are useful ways to use this section.

If you can, write your answers by hand. There is no magic in the pen itself. It just tends to slow the thinking down enough to notice what you might otherwise rush past.

Take your time where it matters. Skip what does not. Come back when your circumstances change, because they will.
